In Russia, this game is better known as "Find a Pair", but the computer version uses the patented name Memory. The puzzle was released in 1959 by the world famous Ravensburger, which specializes in puzzles and children's games. The idea of a simple and useful game is much older, the birthplace of memory is Japan.

During the Heian Period (平安 時代), which lasted from the 9th to the 12th century, Japanese aristocrats enjoyed playing with shells (kai-awase, 貝 合 わ せ). The set consisted of 360 pairs of shells, on the inner side of which were applied images of flowers, costumes, etc. The paired drawings were interspersed with literary phrases with a continuation. The aristocrats turned the shells over, memorized their location and looked for a suitable pair from memory.

The art of making sashes and applying images was so high that kai-awase kits served as dowries for girls from noble families. The Japanese still love to play shells, but the authentic game has not gone beyond the Land of the Rising Sun. But the modern and simplified version of "Memori" quickly conquered the world.
